Dwars door tijd en plaats stroomt een diep gevoelde verwantschap, onophoudelijk in beweging.

Zij zijn haar gidsen, hun sporen wil zij volgen om, in dankbaarheid, nieuwe te ontdekken en haar eigen weg te gaan.

Geëxposeerd werk

2 portretjes, de eerste Mihail Sebastian, in dit voorjaar geschilderd, en de onderste, Joseph Roth, n.a.v. de roman 'Vlucht zonder einde'.

Portret Mihail Sebastian:

Mihail Sebastian heeft een indringende roman  geschreven, Sinds 2000 jaar, waarin de (naamloze) ik-figuur zijn tijd van het oplaaiende antisemitisme beschrijft, én zijn haat liefde verhouding met zijn Joods-zijn.

Ook in deze tijd lopen de gemoederen hoog op, tegenstellingen leiden in plaats van dialoog tot gevecht, groepen staan tegenover elkaar en lijken niet met elkaar te kunnen praten. 

Mihail Sebastian houdt van zijn land (Roemenië), toont zich een enkeling, een gevoelige beschouwer, die uiteenlopende, tegenstrijdige standpunten tracht te doorgronden. Hij bewondert zijn professor Blidaru, de charismatische Nae Ionescu, die grote invloed had op tijdgenoten. Was deze laatste werkelijk anti-semitisch of houdt hij vast aan zijn gedachtegang, dat wetenschap, metafysica en religie binnen eigen grenzen dienen te blijven?

Mihail Sebastian vroeg Nae Ionescu het voorwoord te schrijven voor Sinds 2000 jaar (de roman kwam uit in 1934). Daarin schrijft de laatste:  ‘De Messias is gekomen, Iosef Hechter, en jij hebt hem niet herkend’. Onder meer.  Mihail Sebastian besloot het voorwoord integraal te publiceren.

Waarom dit besluit? We zullen het nooit kunnen achterhalen, Iosef Mendel Hechter, de geboortenaam van Mihail Sebastian, verongelukte in 1945, overreden door een vrachtauto.

Portret Joseph Roth:

Joseph Roth was behalve schrijver ook journalist en scherpe observator. 

Begint hij zijn carrière als rode journalist, hij eindigt deze als een bijna reactionaire, melancholische alcoholist. 

In Vlucht zonder einde schrijft hij 'ik ruik nu wat jullie over tien jaar pas zullen merken ', doelend op het opkomende nationaalsocialisme en fascisme. 

De turbulente tijd, waarin hij leefde, doet in sommige opzichten aan de onze denken.

Two portraits, the first Mihail Sebastian, painted this spring, and the bottom Joseph Roth, based on the novel "Flight Without End."

Portrait Mihail Sebastian:

Mihail Sebastian has written a compelling novel, Since 2000 Years, in which the (unnamed) narrator describes his time of escalating antisemitism and his love-hate relationship with his Jewishness.

Even today, emotions run high, contradictions lead to fighting instead of dialogue, groups are at odds and seem unable to communicate.

Mihail Sebastian loves his country (Romania) and reveals himself to be an individual, a sensitive observer who tries to fathom diverse, conflicting viewpoints. He admires his professor Blidaru, the charismatic Nae Ionescu, who had a great influence on his contemporaries. Was the latter truly anti-Semitic, or does he cling to his line of thought, that science, metaphysics, and religion should remain within their own boundaries?

Mihail Sebastian asked Nae Ionescu to write the preface to "Since 2000 Years" (the novel was published in 1934). In it, the latter writes: "The Messiah has come, Iosef Hechter, and you did not recognize him." Among other things. Mihail Sebastian decided to publish the preface in its entirety.

Why this decision? We will never know. Iosef Mendel Hechter, Mihail Sebastian's birth name, died in an accident in 1945, run over by a truck.

Portrait of Joseph Roth:

Besides being a writer, Joseph Roth was also a journalist and a keen observer.

While he began his career as a journalist in the Red Light District, he ended it as an almost reactionary, melancholic alcoholic.

In "Flight Without End," he wrote, "I smell now what you will only notice in ten years," referring to the rise of National Socialism and fascism.

The turbulent times in which he lived are in some ways reminiscent of our own.
